Hey everyone you may of seen me over on "What bike?" but i just bought a new Voodoo Marasa and I love it!

So I need a lock to keep it safe but I know all too well how easily bikes are stolen if poor quality locks are used as I've had a bike stolen from me before and it was a heap of junk I hate to think how tempting my new bike will be to thieves!!

Can anybody recommend a good secure lock? Something that does not make me the easiest target. (I know there is no such thing as an unpickable lock or uncuttable lock.)

If i had a budget it would be £20.

A £20 lock won't prevent your bike from being stolen. Do you have to leave it anywhere outdoors, out of your sight?

A deterrent but not guaranteed

This one better as smaller and so harder to jack open...but won't stop a determined tooled up thief for long

The best D Locks are more like £70

Check your insurance policy's TS & Cs too to ensure you have a lock that will make them pay up

Also, get plod to mark it and get it registered - a further deterrent if the thief can see a sticker, and if it is nicked, there is a slim chance you may get it back if recovered, or can prove it's yours if it turns up on Gumtree or eBay
Ask your local plod shop for details of dates

The last bike that was nicked off me, had its frame cut through to get at it (all caught on CCTV). It's much easier to shift bits, rather than whole bikes, on the market (so I'm informed). Don't spend gazillions on a hardcore lock, unless you have an insurance policy that requires it. Get a solid lock, which will stop the opportunists, but be aware, if someone wants your bike enough, no lock will save it.

I bought a D-Lock from Mountain Warehouse the other day for £5, it's safe to say it will only be used as a deterrent.

If that £20 is all you can stretch to then make sure you get a cable lock and a D-lock and use both together for added 'security'

I seldom bother with a lock because the bike is never out of my alarmed house or out of my sight. Occasionally we use a cafe lock if the bikes are just outside the cafe window where we're sitting, which would prevent a distraction theft.

Remember to also secure the wheels to the frame, quick release wheels are an opportunistic thief's dream.
Edit. Glad you like the bike :okay:

At home it will be kept locked inside my house. The lock would be mainly for keeping it secure when I go to shops like mentioed a cafe or such like. My bike does have quick release wheels.

Ill take a look at some of the Links posted

Yeah 20 pound seems a bit cheap especially since I'll need cabless to sccure BOTH wheels anybody ever had one of those pit bull branded locks that's linked?

I like the Kryptonite one with cable - probably overkill if in sight at a cafe but maybe not if leaving locked up while you go shopping etc

U-lock for frame cable + padlock for both wheels
You don't need a separate padlock; you should be able to secure the cable with the U-lock.

Otherwise, this is good advice.

I tend to do this, but still for some people a bike is a form of transport, and not really useful for that unless you can leave it unattended.
