Come to that, releasing a quicklink can normally be done without special tools by trapping it on the chainring and bashing it with the nearest available hard object.
I tried that with the old chain, when I was removing it to make way for the new. The quick link plates wouldn't budge (probably due to the fact that they'd been joined for many 1000s of kms), so I had to squeeze them together with a quick link tool (a pair of suitably pointy needle-nosed pliers would also have done this).
