Let's simply ban all overtaking in cities.

Let's just ban cities

Let's just ban Jeremy Vine.

Jeremy Vine said:
We need to have segregated lanes, and there just aren't enough of them. There are 15,000km of roads in London and 175km have a segregated cycle lane, so we're nowhere near having as many segregated lanes as we need

This is actually a very sensible point, but it's lost among all the other drivel he comes out with. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

We don't want segregation. We simply want to be able to ride on existing roads safely.

Why should real estate and public money be expended in vast quantities because some drivers don't know how to behave?

It'd be easier and cheaper, but doubtless politically unpalatable to the Daily Mail masses who regularly complain about the 'War On Motorists', to simply enforce the law ruthlessly.

"We don't need no segregation
We don't need no thought control
No dark sarcasm on the road..."

The main argument, over the years, has been cyclists are slower than cars. Therefore we should move out of the way for cars. If, as Vine says, cyclists are quicker than cars in cities, shouldn't we expect them to move out of the way for us.

Nope , he’s (under) charging for the damage done. If you are driving far enough a car makes sense, then the charge will be a minor part of the day’s expense.
Khan is massively over spent on his budget so the charge could be levelled that he's doing it for the money, not for any 'damage' or air quality. Unfortunately for him he's cooked his own goose as he's unlikely to get in again with Labour. You can see Starmer massively back pedalling as this is a huge vote loser. It's all tied up with politics so best not to get into that.
'Not overtaking' might not be a bad idea but how would it be enforced? Would there be overtaking cameras?
