Adam must have gone to Cornwall to earn some decent cash so if I was Jane I'd be keeping it hot for Adam to return with his over-filled wallet. What kind of 'dream job' drags a guy away from the love of his life? So, he's saying the job is more important than nurturing his evolving relationship with her? QED - she cannot be the love of his life, or he wouldn't jeopardise everything in this way. Thus their relationship has been doomed from the start.
