The biggest pile of shoot every created by mankind.

Good use made of space in a small body and practical well thought out interior.
Lightweight body with good ground clearance, narrow tyres and FWD made it surprisingly capable for a 2WD drive in snow or mud.
The light body made it possible to have acceptable performance and great (for it's era) fuel consumption from a simple and rugged engine.

I have a bike that takes me 100 miles beautifully. Some people spend more on their bikes than I do.

I have a bike that I like to ride sometimes, cost me £400, I also currently have 4 cars, some people send more money on 1 bike than I do on all my cars

So? Its got nothing to do with cost. Some very expensive cars are well designed, some very inexpensive cars are well designed. My view of what good design is, is obviously different to many who've posted.

Not wanting to get at anyone who owns a car like this but I am really interested in why you choose a SUV rather than a large estate car or hatch.

I go with the Estate car option. Reasons-
I don't drive across ploughed fields so don't need 4 wheel drive.
I tow a caravan with it perfectly well.
It has more room inside than most SUVs
It uses about a quarter less fuel than a SUV
It has a lower centre of gravity and so sits lower, is more sporty and smooth.
It has much better safety features than most 4x4s.
It costs less to service, tyres cost less.
It is made to drive on the road - which is what I do, not made/compromised to do something I don't need it to do.
It is safer on the road for bikes and other road users who can be seen around me better.

So why go for an SUV?
I can only think of -bullying presence on road.

It depends upon the SUV I suppose. For example, the Landy Discovery is huge inside and is very convenient for owners of horses and/or bikes etc. But, when talking about SUV's you didn't really mean such vehicles like the Landy?

Fashion dictates a lot. Estates just aren't that fashionable.

I'd like a bigger car. I have a Mondeo Estate. I've looked at this and in reality I would need a van or a pick up truck.

Not sure what the relevance of this is so I'll just post another irrelevance

Plenty of it is about status. It is human nature to many hence the global economy of luxury goods (high priced cars, jewellery, scent, clothes). There's plenty on here do do so, me included.

My friend spent 4K on a bike. It's not 4 times better than mine. Good luck to him.

To berate someone driving an expensive car because another owner drove a similar one badly is no better than blaming one cyclist for the actions of another.

I've never seen the attraction of a 4x4, but Miss Goodbody up the road says there's nowt like a good strong bit of rubber to get you over the crest.

The OP and thread was asking whether we needed yet another SUV, nothing to do with the cost of bikes.

I think the Discovery is assumed to be big inside as it is big outside. It wastes loads of space in its chassis, big wheels, and all the drive system and longer suspension reach.
Sad git I am I have the figures next to me in an old What Car? Disco boot 577/1993 litres (seats up or down) Mondeo Estate - which is not known for its space- 540/1700. Almost matching it.
Take a big booted estate even in a smaller range car like the Pug 307 estate and it is 562/1805. My E class merc comes in at 690/1950 and I would argue that the bigger floor area is much more use than a higher but not as long floor area.
Any decent size estate will match most 4x4s for boot size.

There is of course a bit of difference if you go along the Ford Galaxy type MPV strand rather than the Discovery 4x4 strand and lots in between.
I don't my the Galaxy type car as at least it is doing the thing it is supposed to do well (carrying lots of people or stuff).

I think my gripe with the 4x4 suv fad is that really they are a poor choice for what most people actually require. They are not suitable and are rather bad for city use.

It is perhaps a bit like if someone re-invented space hoppers instead of bikes and a group of people started using them instead of bikes saying things like "well it floats on water you know" or some useless trait they will not need.

Depends what you're carrying - as I've said before, the height of my MPV means I can put bikes in upright, which is a very efficient way to pack them in. The most practical car for a family of three (as we are) was our Multipla - almost a metre of height and a flat floored 4ft x 5ft load area with the three back seats out while we all sat in the three front seats. Shame it was built from tin cans and string.
