For the first time I have had a day off work and reasonable weather for cycling in (no rain) and have gone and done a ride into the Cheshire countryside and back equating to 23 miles. I set off at around around 12:10 and returned just before 3pm. I had a 15 minute lunch break in Wrenbury and a 20 minute stop off at the lbs on Earle Street in Crewe.

The wind was a bit brisk on the return leg and it was fairly cold but the exercise soon got rid of that issue. I found it quite enjoyable to go that far in one go under my own power

The distance I covered overall is near enough half the distance to my Grandma's house near Shrewsbury so I thinking that may be my eventual target for a day ride. That is still a long way off yet though.

It wasn't all fine and dandy though, I had a hairy pass on the lane going out of Ravensmoor where a WVM overtook at speed with little room and oncoming traffic. And on Nantwich road where the cycle path leaves the road and goes onto the path and puts you out onto a junction; I stayed on the road to negotiate the junction safely and had a young woman try to overtake just before a ped refuge and she had to slam on her brakes to avoid demolishing it!!! She disappeared a few yards later at the junction before the mini Tesco and Shell garage, I think if she'd got past me a left hook would have been on the cards with the way she was driving.

Anyway here's the route, slightly altered as Google maps thinks that some roads are one way only when they aren't:

Well done, it's a good feeling when you do you first long ride.

I did my fist 40km (actually 43.5 km = 27.4mls) last Sunday, but that was on a MTB mainly off-road.

This Sunday, all being well, I'm aiming to do 30 miles.

Here for rides.
very well done. remember to step up your mileage gradually, i think most suggest 10% at a time, and build in plenty of rest. rest is when your body gets stronger in response to the effort you put i9n.

Well done. I know the feeling well. I only started cycling last year and have steadily built up from my virgin ride of 7.5 miles to regular 30 mile rides. My longest so far is just over 40 miles. I'm hoping to achieve my first half century soon, although looking out of the window right now, that might not be any time too soon, Bloody Snow!!. Keep up the good work.

I'm with you on this Holdsworth. I just did my longest ever rides last week - 23 miles and then 18 a couple of days later.

Was very pleased. I'm on my MTB with slicks on at the moment - can't afford a road bike yet :-(

So, pats on the back for us both lol

Well done mate. That's a good run, especially at this time of year. +1 for the 10% increase in mileage - though if you step it up increasing around 5 miles per trip per weekend, with a couple of smaller rides during the week, you'll be doing 50 miles in no time. Make sure you take some food with you if you don't already, as well as plenty of water. Your supposed to eat something for every hour or so on the road.

Good advice from others before me - I would add that the breaks/stop are a very good idea/principle and make sure you drink as you go too - a sip/mouthful every 15-20 mins will keep you nicely hydrated

, without the need for too many 'comfort breaks' !

Won't be long before going to Grandma's will be fine :bicycle: ..... then aim to come back again

That’s great, nice route.

I love longer rides, but didn’t know about the 10 % gradual increase (being a newbie and all) , thank you.

I still hover between 20-27 miles on a weekend day out.

Do tell when you do your day trip to your Grandma’s house.

I am already eagerly waiting for the next opportunity to get out into the countryside, I have already planned a route out that is around 5 1/2 miles longer than the first (28 1/2 miles). I am not sure if that is too big an increase for a second ride but the route it takes looks nice.

I have never had much trouble with that road, it was scary at first when I was new to cycling back in the summer. Most drivers tend to give loads of room when passing and it is very straight so visibility is often good. It is just the few that don't respect other road users and pass too close at 60mph plus. I had far worse experiences on the A51, the road into Crewe and even some of the back lanes.

I mus take time to stop at that pub on the way back one day as you say, it is a bit tricky trying to cross onto the other side though from the northbound side. Maybe the new cycle path with light controlled crossing won't be a total waste of cash after all if it permits easier access to the watering hole
