So as some of you know, I've been working on a Fixxer-Upper/Project/Custom type job, the point of which was to teach myself about cycle mechanics and maintainence and to end up with a bike I could take to the place my hybrid isn't really comfortable with.

I done most of it when I had a week off work, then things ground to a hault when I had to go back...

...but now it is FINISHED !!!!!!

I got it from a partial house clearance my old man was working at, along with some other bikes. All had been left outside for god knows how long, I have to beat down stinging nettles taller than me to get to them.

It was sun bleached, rusted, scratched and beaten up. Parts ceased up and worn, just buggered really.

It might have been a BSO when it was originally brought, but now I am really happy with what I have built.

So here it is - This is what it was

Everything is working perfect first time !

Here's what happened to it

Stripped down of parts
Paint stripped

Rust ground away

Gouges ironed out

metal treated

resprayed and laquered (spelling?)

cassette cleared of rust

calipers freed up (had locked up) reconditioned and painted

chainrings and cranks reconditioned

pedals reconditioned

BB and headset replaced

new forks

Second hand Shimano Deore XT rear mech

Front mech reconditioned
new chain

shifters taken off one of the other heaps I had reconditioned and donated to this

new brake levers

Stem stripped and reconditioned

Bars stripped and reconditioned

.... that's all I can think of right now.

Wow! Looks like you put some hours into that! I think most people would have hauled its sorry pink ass to the nearest skip, yet your project has breathed not only a new lease of life into it, but actually made it better than it was when it was new. Looks cool now. I think the flat pedals suit it, not sure I'd put clipless pedals on it (unless of course you always ride with clippy shoes). Those pedals look similar to some DeoreXT pedals I had years ago. They were bomb-proof (specifically: Rover 827-proof!). Nice work.

thank you both. It has been really fun doing this job, I really enjoyed getting all the bits off, stipping them down and making them all good as new again.

I could propbabley have salvaged a couple more bits, the headset might have been OK but it just seemed a bit to worn out for the sake of a few quid on ebay. The old forks could certainly have been re-used but they was just horrible things so I got some the new Suntour XCMs off ebay with the money I made from selling some other stuff, I wanted lock-out anyway.

The only thing that went particually wrong was entirely myown doing, I went and brought a Shimano Deore XT front mech without checking it was gonna be ok (don't know why I did this), tunrs out the one I brought was a top pull, I needed bottom or dual pull. Still, I have that for my next project

Oh the other thing I want to do is to put fresh, slightly wider tyres on, 2.30s or 2.10s, but that can wait till next pay day.

That looks really good! You've done a nice job :becool:

I'm in the process of doing something very similar, although not quite so ambitious as you; I recently dragged my old Viking MTB from the depths of the shed and using a combination of spares from previous upgrades (stem, saddle, seat post & pedals) and some new bits (forks, bars & tyres) it's in danger of becoming a pretty good bike. I'll be finishing it off this weekend with any luck, great fun!

It's lovely... but without wishing to be rude, I always get a "Trigger's Broom" feeling about bike restoration projects ... is it the same bike, or is it the same frame, or is it a new bike? Not that it matters, tbh, it looks great. Hope you enjoy riding it.

lol i know what you mean it's obviously not all original, parts that are NEW

Forks, BB, Headset, Saddle and brake levers. And chain. Technically the wheels but I am not counting those, seeing as the originals are perfectly good and sat in the store room as back-ups.

Brough used

Rear Mech

Everything else is off the original, or was a donor bike I paid nothing for.

Then again the point wasn't to restore it, it was propper rubbish, just to teach myself how it all works so as to be able to better maintain bikes I own down the line, also if I take the country route to my GFs place, some of that is actually pretty rough and the hybrid isn't upto it. I forgot how rough till I tried it on my hybrid a couple of times, not cool hehe

Good stuff...wasn't meaning to be rude or take away from your achievement... looks great, hope you get a lot of enjoyment out of it.
