Thanks for the translation Gavroche, for many years I had believed La Manche was French for The Minch.. In France we call it :" La Manche" which means The Sleeve as this is what it looks like .
Mer de!Even English maps have the North Sea marked as the 'German Ocean' up until the early 1800's
After the 29th of March 2019 it will revert back to being the German Ocean, to match the Irish Sea on the other side and the newly renamed Mer de France to the south
I guess we should thank our lucky stars that old Gavroche isn't Spanish - he'd have an apoplectic fit about Gibraltar!
Better not play with the spelling. We had trouble agreeing how to spell Concorde.How about it gets renamed the English Chanel?

It's the same reason that what everyone else calls the Bay of Biscay after a bit of Spain the French call the Baie De Gascogne.
