... when you finally give up looking for something and just bloody-well buy a replacement, the formerly lost items will turn up, but not before you've used the replacement, so you cannot return it.

In other news, it turns out my 'good set' of bike lights were in the glove-box. Of course - why didn't I think to look there?

I've lost a cycle computer off one of my bikes. I've searched high and low, probably for hours. It'll cost £10 to replace,so the hours of searching isn't really cost effective as i could be doing something else with those hours. When i get round to buying a replacement it'll probably turn up. Ah well, at least i'll be able to take the old wiring off the bike and put the lost and found computer on another bike. IF it does turn up!

I have two odd gloves, both left hand. I know that if I throw them away, the missing ones will turn up.

Yep; I carried 2 groundsheets on The Way of the Roses last year after replacing the "lost" one....

Often the memory is stored but your conscious mind struggles to access it. Thinking of something else can often let your subconscious mind retrieve the memory.
That sounds like nonsense but somebody said that kind of thing to me once and I put it to the test with cryptic crosswords. I have often got stuck on crosswords in the evening and given up on them. Next morning I can usually pick up the same crossword and rattle off the last 10 or 12 answers in a matter of seconds. I'm sure that I must have been thinking about the clues while I was asleep.
