It always makes me slightly nervous when I have to do this to one of my bikes

Did you actually ride this bike whilst away?

Only once, I took the bike with me optimistically hoping that my chest cold would clear, but it did not.

Seeing as the car has roof rails, why not fix it on the roof?

Best thing i ever did was bin the nasty rear carrier and get some thule bike racks for the roof.

I might well look into that, I've only used the rear rack for my heavy MTB and singlespeed before, this was the first time I've put a lighter bike on it. I drove home into a headwind and was somewhat alarmed that the bike lifted off the rack, and was only held down by the straps!

It also must have rubbed the rack and has gouged the frame really badly.

Pipe lagging is good stuff to protect the bike on a rack. Plumbers merchant or B and Q et al. I also wrap cardboard around it where the straps are though it would probably disintegrate in heavy rain.

I find it incredible that the whole rack is only attached to the car by the towing ball thingie, it must be really well designed.

It is exceptionally well designed and always amazes me that it does stay put and not move, but we have used the Thule rack for over 10 years and another one (drop on carriers) for a previous 10 years and they do indeed work. I like them because the bikes stand on the rack and I can actually get any bike (including our 22kg expedition bikes) onto the rack (or off) without assistance and with a bad left wrist and not being the strongest female in the world, that is bonus for me. The downside is that I can not get the rack onto the car by myself, but it can go onto the car well in advance and does not affect the vehicle at all.

Most folk don't realise that if the bikes are on the back, and obscure number plates or lights, you need a lighting board.

Much prefer roof racks despite the fuel penalty, keeps my bikes out of the way of idiots that may rear end the car.. Also keeps the bikes cleaner if roads damp or wet.

Your bike is on a car but the bike is also on the road. Some road raging cagers are going to have a field day

I have a car with roof bars so I fitted one of those racks that keep the bike upright, it all went together pretty easily and looked well that was when I realised I couldn't lift my damn butchers bike more than 3 inch off the ground.

Apologies! just couldn't help myself
