If there's flint in your neck of the woods, then that's probably the culprit. Had a shard of the stuff cut through a Specialised Nimbus tyre some years back leaving a similar size gash.

Could maybe patch it up with rubber from your marigolds?
Depends on the frame colour, could be a danger of colour clash.

I've successfully repaired some tyres that have a small slit through the carcase like the one in OPs photo, but that slit is simply too big.
It happens unfortunately (slits in new tyres)...I had one in a £20 tyre days after fitting it. Its rotten luck bug theres no way I'd even try the one in the photo.

Thanks for all the prompt replies.

The tyre is a Michelin Pro4 Endurance. New in November 2020, so hasn't had much use. It was fine when I got on the bike after visiting Marks & Spencers, so something attacked it between M&S and the Trans Pennine Trail. That will teach me to go the long way round on a bike path, rather than the main road which I use 99% of the time.

I will order a new tyre to replace it. I've never actually thrown out any tyres. I have a stash of bad ones in the garage which I keep around just in case they'll be handy for some other purpose.

The orange bit in the photo is actually a puncture repair patch. I stuck some materials in the tyre in an attempt to reinforce it. It did get me home OK, but I didn't really trust it for anything else.

For smaller slits i always use a strip of emery tape with the abrasive facing to the outside of course. The cloth reinforcing of the tape makes for a really quite strong, although not indestructable repair. Done it many times. A puncture pad can't withstand the inner tube trying to escape out the slit for very long, emery tape does a much better job. In the old repair kits, you used to get a strip of reinforced cloth for just this reason.
