Might there be a crack in the frame, or bottom bracket shell?
I can't see any and it doesn't creak under pressure in any other way, other than standing on the crank arms.

If the new crankset doesn't fix it I shall have to assume something worse...perhaps a crack.

it's shot jonny ,new bearings won't solve the problem.your crank will just chew them up because of the play.you must have been riding with bad bearings for a while.
I think so, the Chap in the LBS said he hadn't seen so much wear on an axle for...ever...which shocked me.

My packing and greasing method proved to fail this morning too, so I am hoping the newly ordered crankset will cure this issue. if it doesn't I am concerned that something "unfixable" has occurred.

Oh and I've ordered a new BB too, just in case you are right and the replacement is already shot

Thanks for all the support.

The new crankset arrived from Germany yesterday all g with a third BB (which matched the original so was instantly fitted).

All seems.well although only 15 miles covered. Usually the clicking occurs after a mile or so...fingers crossed.

Wow London is so quiet without my one man band.

Also, very impressed with the German exporter. Swift, as described and all totally genuine parts.the set, along with BB and.all bolts etc, £60 inc dispatch. Some shops in the UK wanted over £100.
