Cycle jerseys are useful as the pockets are out of the way. Otherwise you could add some luggage to your bike (though be warned, the amount of stuff you decide you really need on a bike ride is directly proportional to the amount of luggage space you have). A couple decent jerseys I have are actually Sports Direct ones (Mine are karrimor branded, but I think they've re-branded them Muddyfox now). Not the flashiest jerseys but they do have three decent pockets and were pretty cheap.

With respect to the brake dust. Are you on about the grey gunk that you get on your wheels? If so then wet wipes can take it off, and so can kitchen towels with a bit of GT-85. I tend to wait for it to dry on my bikes and then brush it off with a stiff brush though.

Okay, the reason why I said about jerseys is that I have base layers/sports tops I wear to the gym so I'm not too sure there will be a benefit aside from a pocket in the back

Hard to describe till you've tried one, you don't need to spend much money either.

Okay, thanks guys. I will be buying a bag/pannier for now as that will be of most benefit with commuting. Jerseys will wait until the summer when I can justify to myself how much I 'need' one

Jerseys are brilliant – as are padded shorts.
My partner was amazed how polite cyclists were when she borrowed my bike and went out for a ride – I did point out they f•••• ignored me and she did have her Team Lampre top unzipped.

Suppose that will help.

have looked at jerseys before but the cheaper ones sound like they will be rubbish (fit) and the better ones are much more expensive
Likewise I don't have a bomb to spend on fancy kit. Sports direct do some cheap cycling clothes; I paid a little bit extra to get a jersey with a grippy bottom hem - so if you aren't using bib shorts/tights then having a cycling jersey means that when you're in cycling position there's not a chilly gap between bottoms and tops as the jersey is longer at the back than a normal t-shirt. Also the pockets are super-useful and you can still wear any other warm base layers you have underneath the jersey.

You'll get used to the road buzz from the crappy Tarmac conditions. But I found changing my tyres helped a lot, so when you've done a few miles upgrade your tyres. I'm told though it might be a load of Beau Larques that a carbon seat post helps also, but I've not tried it myself. Also as you get used to riding, you'll find always of avoiding some of the bad Tarmac. WTTCCF
