Is there a stigma to only wear a cap?

I don’t want to wear glasses, period.
OK :okay:

I don't know if you've noticed but there's an equally judgemental minority who get a feeling of virtue by berating other cyclists about their choice to wear a "plastic hat" or to look like an "anthromorphic dildo". These people are also c*nts, just from the opposite extreme of the scale.

I wear a cap sometimes, I wear a helmet sometimes too, and I (like most) don't feel the need to belittle anyone's choice. It's a shame that some do.

Fully agree. Likewise I sometimes always (winter commuting) wear a lid, sometimes never (going to the shops) and sometimes it depends (summer leisure rides).

[That's an appallingly written sentence. And I'm too lazy to do anything about it]

It makes perfect sense though and I'm with you, it shouldn't necessarily be a binary issue. On a summer ride on quieter back roads and tracks, I really like a cap.

Sometimes though I wear a helmet because my daughter worries, and I'd rather reassure her than try to have a nuanced helmet debate with a 9 year old. There's perfectly good arguments for and against, I just bristle a bit when someone's firm belief oversteps a line into being slyly critical of people who choose differently.

I agree. I hope I didn't come across that way, apologies if I did.

Am feeling a little sensitive as we were overtaken on our tandem (lidless) by a roadie at the weekend who for some reason best known to themselves thought it appropriate to shout at us about our lack of headgear. Pillock.

On the cap front, don't know about anyone else, but wearing a helmet in pouring rain always results in water running into my eyes and stinging appallingly, presumably picking up dried up sweat from the pads. A cap under the lid prevents this and is also surprisingly effective at keeping rain off glasses.

@CanucksTraveller (or any other h****t users) : I promise that I respect your approach to headwear, so this is meant in peace:

Have you ever had a complete stranger ride past you and criticise you for wearing a helmet on your bike?

No, nobody's criticised me in person for either choice, it's purely been an online thing.
I suspect most of us are in a wide middle band, wearing sometimes, and sometimes not. (I don't pigeon hole myself as a "helmet wearer" by the way, it's a bit of optional equipment that you may decide to use, not a lifestyle choice). There are critics at both ends of that scale, I find them equally objectionable (and @mjr I hope that answers your question?)

That is really quite sadly desperate if you believe it. I will assume it is tongue-in-cheek!
:stop:
Sadly desperate is cap matching helmet matching glasses matching Jersey matching bike 😊 and think yourself lucky there is no picture of the matching shorts :stop:
