Is there a shim to convert a 31.8mm front mech clamp for use on a 28.6mm tube?

Before I start stripping one frame of all it's lovely, if a bit old 105 gear and putting it on my lovely, if even older 531 frame I want to know I don't have to go and find a new front mech for the sake of a measly 1.2millimeters.

In my day it was for the sake of a measly 3.2 mm, whatever that is in feet and inches.

3.175mm not 3.2mm

I won't quibble over 1/40th of a mm
I love that the industry calls them 28.6mm, 31.8mm and 34.9mm when they always were, and remain, imperial tube dimensions.
I hate that they have not devised a way to make my vernier calipers display fractions when I'm using the Imperial setting. How the hell am I supposed to know what 0.25 of an inch is. I mean, really.

Are you using vernier calipers or digital calipers? Depends on the type of job you do as to whether 1/40th of a mm makes a difference!
Is there a job on a bike where 1/40th of a mm makes a difference? An appreciable one that is. I think normal temperature fluctuations would make this level of tolerance a nonsense on a bike. Certainly the fluctuations in my workshop.
I am using digital vernier calipers. A perfectly acceptable and much used term, therefore correct.

No such thing as digital vernier calipers! Pet hate of mine, I think everyone at work calls them that because they know it winds me up!

I'm 24 so I may be being dumb but.
28.6 millimetres = 1.12598425 inches
31.8 millimetres = 1.2519685 inches
34.9 millimetres = 1.37401575 inches
Makes even less sense...

Well, if it is any consolation as a 55 yr old, I had not appreciated the imperial relationship.

How are fractions better than decimals?
They aren't better, but as they were the unit of choice when the industry standards were established, they continue to be relevant. Once people insist on converting not only to decimals, but also to a different (metric) measurement, so decimals become more complicated as you need to ensure consistency. If a tube is measured to 1"3/8 it's precisely that. Convert the measurement twice and watch the discussions on tolerance and acceptable number of decimal places bloom!

You can have a lot of fun with unit comparison/conversion too. I remember one maths teacher getting us to calculate the speed of his Austin 7 in furlongs per fortnight.

If everybody calls them that then I think there is an argument for their existence. Consensus is how we arrive at the usage of words. If it gets used enough and put into print there's a good chance the O.E.D. will include it in their publication as a perfectly cromulent word. Would you rather be French with their Acadame Francaise or whatever they call it?
