I was discussing nicensleazys thread about how often women think about sex with my wife over dinner tonight. I wont tell you what she said:ohmy: but the subject got round to the male menopause and that fact that in her view it was a nonsense dreamed up by stupid men yearing for their lost youth. Just wondered what you lot thought.....

(and I dont mean "how much women think about "sex with my wife" before Fnaar jumps in:biggrin: )

And how often do women think about sex with your wife over dinner?

But in all seriousness, I think it's quite well accepted in reputable medical circles now that there is an andropause which men go through in middle age. It's the same as the menopause in that it's also related to diminishing hormone levels.

Ah nice to see that good old fashioned sexism also comes with Y chromosomes... Or X. Whatever...

When she starts hers, tell her it's a load of rubbish made up by stupid women to justify wearing too many jumpers.

Andropause, also described as Irritable Male Syndrome, the title of a book that helped enormously in my latest battle with depression.

Men have marked and permanent hormonal changes - more estrogen and less testosterone, in mid life. More enlightened women's responses have been along the lines of "well, if we want them to acknowledge PMS, we'd better acknowledge IMS, or else he's just being an peanut for the fun of it".

If my testosterone and hormones are heading south, why do I fancy a wider and wider range of female now I'm in my fifties?

'cos you're more desperate?

I know what you mean. It's like being a 17 year old who happens to like older women as well. Nothing wrong with that.

An interesting topic. It seems perfectly plausible that a marked change in hormone levels could be related to particular symptoms, but I would be cautious about the tendency to medicalise normal ageing processes. It's no accident that the "andropause" site is authored by Schering-Plough. In principle I've nothing against men using HRT if it has positive effects for them, but (in addition to the possibility of negative side-effects) it also goes without saying that there is a psychological/social element to all this, to do with the perceived desirability of youth. George Melly memorably remarked that when his libido eventually declined it was a great relief to him - "like being unchained from a lunatic". The article Crackle posted is a good one...
