Is the wind really a factor?

Have really enjoyed reading all of the stuff that you guys have come back with but anyone got any stats etc that show (or disprove) the fact that wind on a circular route does not affect overall effort i.e. Does the tailwind make up for the effort given in the headwind? For me it always seems so much harder on a breezy (or downright windy day) but it is all in my head?
Read the article pointed out to me earlier btw but not sure that answered my question (although a very good read!)

Headwind is a pain, but today the sidewind was just as hard going, went climbing and it felt like most of the run was being hit by a unrelenting sidewide coming up from the River Forth.
As for stats, alas i have none, but my legs tell me its hard going:laugh:

According to the sites calc that I put up earlier..

200lb rider, 16mph, flat

0mph wind - 48.13 watts
10mph head - 206.5 watts
10mph tail - 2.5 watts

So it looks very clear that the extra power needed to push through the headwind isn't returned on the way back.

Wow...that's a massive difference and glad that I can tell the wife that I'm not a Jessie for moaning about the wind!
