Is the Trek 1.2 a good bike for a beginner?

The bike is 20.5 lb ( or 21.5 lb with a pint of water in a bottle ).

The triple ( 30 tooth ring ) to the 26 sprocket 'should' get it up a 25% grade.

This was the ( and probably still are ) gear set on rental bikes in San Francisco.

There are plenty of 25% grades and I got up one on a hire bike.

You can't go wrong.

Get a nice, evenly-spaced triple like this.

if you like to keep a good regular cadence, a triple will allow for that better than a compact where the drop from big to small chainring is quite pronounced.

Both the trek and the spesh are fine bikes and you wont regret buying either. I'm a spesh man because thats what my local bike shop stocked at the time and it's been a terrific bike. No doubt if it had been a trek i would feel the same. Buy. Enjoy.

Not at 16% though.
The Specialized went up £50 or 8.5% and got upgrades on the 09 model

Am I right in thinking the '10 models of the Allez are cheaper than the '09 ones, saving about 100 quid or so at the expense of having the inferior Sora equipment rather than Tiagra?

I liked trek when I bought my current bike but when I saw the good looking allez 18 there was no competition, although saying that i would probably have just enjoyed the Trek, I liked the look and after test ride Specialised from now on. Good luck dave
