Is the Carrera Intercity Disc 9 a significantly better ride than the Disc 8?

Sometimes more expensive bikes have worse ride quality. . . . . . . .
Thanks, some interesting insights.
I think generally the Carrera folding bikes are unbeatable for spec vs price in the UK. It's a manufacturer to retailer direct business model and Halfords operate on a high turnover, low margin compared to most bike shops. I don't know about the current disc based model but the older rim brake model was from fuji-ta the world's biggest bike manufacturer by volume who are one the big companies for folding bikes, they have supplied; Halfords, Decathlon, Tern, Dahon and many other brands.

Again, interesting. I only started to find out how Halfords operates just now when I started to look for a folder, and I am impressed by their product ranges and their value for money. The Intercity Disc 9 that I have ordered seems to be very good value, and I am impressed that by how few of them there are on the secondhand market and by how they hold their price, always a good sign of quality. Few or no cheap bargains here.

Hi Colin, I have only just seen this. I am fine, thank you.
I cancelled my order for the Carrera Intercity Disc 9, decided the step-thru was a bit high for me. I wrote later threads and in the end I bought a preloved Electra Townie 7D on Ebay UK. I swapped out the Harley Davidson style handlebar for a slightly dropped handlebar.
I did a tiny bit of test riding on the YMCA car park in November but then it started raining and I lost all desire to cycle.
I hope to start again soon and and to see whether I am likely to survive the risks of road use - if not, I shall re-sell.
So at the moment the bike is just a nice thing to look at. In theory the semi-reclining style, designed to let me get both feet flat on the ground without getting off the saddle, will help me, but I shall see.
I hope to write a new thread if I succeed in riding this bike. In theory it is THE bike for very old riders (unisex).
Meanwhile, I enjoy looking at it.

guys, looking at buying a carrera intercity disc8 and was wondering if anybody has done a brake upgrade for the disc 9 items ??
is it a direct swop ? i would think the frame is the same and forks so would be a matter of just swopping the items out for better brakes ,tia jason

I think it would be cheaper just to buy a disc 9!

I have seen a few bargain 9s go on ebay. For example, there is currently one in Bexleyheath going for £260. Like that one though, they are usually collect only so it is a case of finding one near enough to you.

Swapping mechanical discs for hydraulic is unlikely to be cheap, compared to the used cost of a 9 mentioned above.

You'd need brake levers, hydraulic hoses and fittings as well as calipers. I can't see that being less than £150, at a guess, and maybe more.

And then there's the 9 speed drivetrain, 2 piece crank set...I'd just be easier and less expensive to buy a 9.

I stumbled up on this thread yesterday.

Inspired, I stumbled into the Hellfrauds local to the mother unit, having trogged out to get her some groceries. A trip I'd have cycled, if I had a bike with me. I had a look at the folding bikes - they seem to be about the electric models. They did have an intercity - with vee brakes and Microshift 8 speed shifting.

Anyway, a short while later I took a look at faceache marketplace. Lo and behold, there's a Carerra Intercity for sale, about 1 mile away from the mother unit's abode. It's £80, reduced from £120. I message the seller.

He obviously goes to check the bike over, comes back and says "sorry it's not for sale, the gears have stopped working". I said, what if I offer you £50 and fix the gears myself?

So I've picked the bike up. It has been used for a couple of seasons of commuting and it's pretty grimey. And it looks to have spent a while outside. But, it's on the original tyres. There's some meat left on the rims. All the hinges work okay. It's still got the mudguards and the rack. And even comes with a set of USB rechargeable lights. And although it's lost paint in a couple of places, the condition isn't too bad overall.

I think with a gear cable, rear brake blocks, possibly a new chain and some TLC, it will be almost as good as new. I think it will probably live in the van, so I've always got a bike with me when I go anywhere with in it. Might save a few short van trips.

TL DR; I got myself a Carerra Intercity (vee-brakes, 8 speed microshift) for £50
