I don't think a bike looks complete without them. Although I make an exception for MTBs and thoroughbred racers. So I clearly do think some bikes look complete without them. They are useful though.
Oh, I'm so confused.:rolleyes:

I feel pride with having managed to fit mudguards, rather than the actual aesthetic pleasure of a mudguarded bike.

I think the next great stage in bicycle design will be the ability to shed and un-shed mudguards easily. Maybe something like a cartridge that works the same as those plastic window blinds (although they arent necessarily a cartridge)

This exists already. It's called a Crud Catcher. You can also buy rear mudguards, which clamp to the seatpost and can be removed in half a second.

Yes, mud is corrosive as my wheel rims will testify having not been cleaned by their previous owner. They have a lovely pattern of corrosion on the side walls.

Its a concern lower down the list for fulltime serious utility cyclists who just need to get from a to b with minimum fuss.
And minimum coverings of mud, filth, crap etc etc...
