Is GCN circling the drain?

I watch GCN almost every day on YouTube and visit their website too. I read on road.cc that Warner Bros has sold GCN back to its founder and their website is closing. This comes only 6 months after their subscription site closed. I will be devastated if they go under. Is anyone else worried?

Well...I'm hoping and assuming given that they existed quite happily for years in their current form before getting involved with Warner Bros, they can continue to do so going forward. That said, given the current state of the cycling industry and the rather bumpy income ad revenue from youtube brings in...I can see why you might be worried. I guess it might be a bit embarassing for them but I'd rather see them set up a Patreon revenue stream before they just call it quits and disappear. I'd chip in, a little bit.

I wish Road.cc had a bigger youtube presence, they actually do reviews and aren't as beholden to keeping sponsors happy.

My suggestion is they'll go back to what they did best; Youtube videos, some reviews, etc. rather than expanding too much for a market where the spend is reduced currently.

Cillian Kelly was first to announce his redundancy. Not surprised his card was marked 😀 look how long it took him to get the uploader fixed. So long it became a long running joke 😂.

Wouldn't surprise me as presumably their own trajectory will largely mirror that of the wider industry.

While I'm not 100% sold as some of the technical content is a bit dubious and sometimes it's painfully obvious where their agenda lies (ultimately they exist as a marketing medium) I hope they survive as they have made some excellent content and I like most of the presenters.

That said I rarely watch GCN much now as they're more road-focussed than I am, and I do find some of the marketing bias hard to swallow at times... although appreciate that this is what keeps them going.

Interesting that they've been re-sold by the big multi-national that swallowed them up presumably when cycling was a lot more profitable - shades of Kona and I hope it cost WB dearly..

From this week's GCN video they're closing the website and having a premium chargeable YouTube channel, which is where their documentaries will sit. I'm not sure that'll work imho, but we'll have to wait and see.
