So your advice is if you don't have the £50 tool, then don't even check the cable tension?
I suggest that you buy a £20 one and keep the bike properly maintained. Play around with whatever you want to, but alignment is more often out on most bikes. So if you want the gears set up properly start from the beginning, not halfway through.
