50 too old? I hope not. I'm a 52 year old fat bloke who commutes every day, all weather. I'm not too crazy about hills, but, honestly, I was NEVER good at hills. I ride them, but don't like them! ;-)

I draw inspiration from an old man in my area who owned a bike shop. He was nationally ranked, into his 80s, and on club rides, would leave most people in the dust....on a FIXED GEAR.

My parents hit 60 last month. Mum got her first ever decent bike, they've been out on their bikes today and they think they're the next Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton. Age is all in the mind, don't even think about it!!

I certainly hope not too!! I'm 53 and have just bought a Van Nic Amazon because I read it would last me at least 20yrs LOL.

Thanks for all the morale boosting

Thanks to everybody for all the support here,I can actually feel myself getting psyched up for this project now, just need to check the route out a bit more, must admit to preferring the towpath than the A roads though, i guess its sacrilege to ride the footpath, which I have done some of

At 56, I'm one of the youngest members of the weekly "Coffee Club" Wednesday ride. The oldest member, an ex-pat Lancs lad, turned 70 this year. He hasn't missed a season since '52 and I'd bet most posters here wouldn't be able to hold his wheel for more than a kilometre.

Then there's another friend (also a relocated Brit and featured on this page -- second profile down) .... Well, we can all hope we are riding like him at 82. Most aren't at 30!

Don't panic - yet!

I had the privilege of meeting a true "Gentleman of the road" called Ron Beams.

This was his 99th Birhday, and the Wayfarers group has several octogenarians.

Also look at the CTC obituaries....

Cycling into your eighties and nineties is not that uncommon!

Definitey agree with the all the above... but if you want to live to be cycling in to your 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s then AVOID the A5.

I met Ron Beams once too - he'd just fitted electric assist to his recumbent trike, at the age of about 93...

I took it up (cycling that is) at 46. Did C2C at 47 LeJOg at 48, Mt Ventoux at 49 and 361 days. Got a full sus MTB for 50th Birthday and scare myself on red routes. Cycle most days and in summer commute sometimes 30 miles each way. If I had known what I was missing I would have started before the exploding waistband forced me into action!

Once you've cracked 20 miles you can do anything!
