If that was three days FT, he was taking the piss. Last bike I built took a night (groupset on and set up, headset installed, BB30 installed, bars taped).

3 days~! wtf. 160 quid pure labour and he wants to fit it in between jobs....'ees 'avin' a larf.

I'd want him waiting for it at 7.30am purely because it was convenient for me and finished before bed time. Pah!

He should have been a plumber! (no offence to plumbers btw...) lol.

if you think it's too high, go somewhere else. James McNeil Whistler would have charged more.

I wonder if many aren't looking at this from the wrong side. Gaz asked about charging, not paying.
Or, then again...
...because you couldn't afford the shop charges?
At £160 for a build, I'm not surprised.

When you book a full service, they do less than a build.

Gaz you can txt me the LBS name if you'd prefer, but I don't think it's that unreasonable. 3 days is a long time (a day solid build time is right), but I guess they will have the £10 puncture repairs and 'services in' which cost bugger all to do, before your build, but make the money.

A bike build is workshop time. £30 an hour is not much..add in overheads, tools, rent rates, etc etc.. (PS I am an accountant) - For a build where they have NO MARGIN on parts, the charges will be more.

Gaz, I thought that a couple of days ago you were asking about doing a bb yourself because you couldn't afford the shop charges?
Was asking for my next project because I knew this one was gonna be ( as quoted ) approx £90

So knew I couldn't afford that price twice , but when it came to double I was even more shocked

Guess it smarts when I'm a pretty loyal customer of the place and go in for 99% of the jobs I can't do myself

Tell him.

Yes, it's after the fact. But talk to him, say you are a loyal customer and didn't question his prices as you trusted him. Tell him you feel that trust has been betrayed somewhat by such a high price. If he gets snooty and defensive about it, f*** him, he's a rip off merchant and doesn't deserve your custom.

WTF? They quoted £90 and then charged £160???? Surely they should be contacting you before undertaking the work to check you're happy to pay that. I'd be inclined to pay the £90 quoted and argue the rest. Hate businesses that do sh*t like that!

PS - Bikes looks nice from the other thread though.
