Speeds have come on a bit since 2008.

I'm paying virgin £27 a month for this so that sounds pretty good.

I have moved from Hebden Bridge to Todmorden since we last did this. My BB is slightly quicker now - about 16 Mb/s download and 0.8 Mb/s upload. That is plain ADSL though - I can't get fibre despite being less than 2 km from the telephone exchange and it being available nearby. Openreach have gone from saying 'Coming soon' to 'No plans yet' with no explanation of what the problem is.
I recently received an email from Plusnet with an offer to upgrade me to fibre. Whoopee! I went online to order it. No such offer was accessible to me via the website so I decided to do it the old-fashioned way, by phone. It only took 5 minutes for the very helpful young woman I spoke to discover that I still...

:banghead:

It wouldn't be quite so bad if someone would tell me what the problem is, and when it will be sorted out. I will try going to the Openreach website for info and if that doesn't work I might just try asking the next Openreach engineer that I spot working at the roadside near here.

I suspect that the problem is in the underground ducting that they route the fibre through. I remember them messing about years ago. I don't know if they were checking ducting or stuck trying to put fibres through it, but whatever they were trying to do, nothing much came of it!

We have fibre to house but our upload speed is always faster than the download speed - albeit the download speed is still very fast.

I wonder what causes the differences?

Edit: just checked using mobile phone from the kitchen table which is not far from the router it was 226 down and 337 up.

I’m with Virgin and this latest test shows 278 download. I’m pleased with that.

After they dug up our road and laid fibre ducting a few weeks ago I checked online and saw that the company is Gigafiber. Digging a little deeper it says availability from August 2023. I’ve been very happy with the service we’ve been getting from Zen so I can’t see me jumping ship.

Full fibre here, 937 mb download and 110 mb upload to house, about half the download speed via the Wi-Fi to my iPad I’m writing this on. So pretty good along the fibre and to wired devices although the internal Wi-Fi dynamics of the house is a limit. I’ve had it nearly a year and is great for work video calls, otherwise I don’t really notice a huge difference as I don’t play games or stream many films. Not much more expensive than the previous package. We’ve left the copper wire in place for a backup phone line should the power go off. Hall now looks like it’s full of Christmas lights!

My broadband is normally only used by me, and that is mainly for normal web surfing, email, and YouTube/Netflix/Prime viewing in HD. My (by modern standards) slow download speed of 16 Mb/s is not too bad for that. The poor 0.75 Mb/s upload speed is a pain though for any big transfers.

I am hoping to buy a 4k TV this year and I would definitely need a faster download speed for UHD streaming. I also want to start uploading videos to YouTube and do NOT want to be doing much of that at 0.75 Mb/s!

I really hope that Openreach's fibre availability target here of 'soon' does NOT end up stretching out as far as December 2026!

Changing to fibre last year was great for my family.
We now get 225mb, but the real difference is that the line is constant. We haven’t had a dropout in months, where as with copper the signal would drop out all the time., especially on Saturday night when usage increased.

THAT'S what i'd (We'd) relish. Although our speed comes up as anything around 150mbps; which is generally more than enough for anything mundane we do - it does seem to drop out for 30 seconds here or there.

Not a huge issue for me; but does cause some issues for my wife downloading stuff; and my Son who's a bit of a gamer.
