Hi,

I've ordered a new crank for my cross bike (triple compared to double). I've removed the old one, but not (watching you tube videos) that it's recommended to use a torque wrench to tighten the new one on.

Will I get away without a torque wrench?

Thanks
steve

Yeah - my flatmate has a combined pedal spanner / 14mm socket attachment on the other end. This seemed to fasten the crank bolts on an old MTB I was messing about with just fine.

Cheers,

If you are an experienced, sympathetic mechanic you will have a good idea of torque by feel. But, for the sake of a few pounds you can get a torque wrench and you do not risk stripping threads on expensive parts.

What sort of BB?
With square taper, the general rule is as tight as you can get it with a standard length spanner (160mm or so, goes past the pedal without having to be removed).

If your bike is steel or aluminium alloy, then yes, as long as you have an approximate idea. Be aware that under-torquing on BBs is almost as bad as over torquing. A loose BB will, under persistent load, damage the shell internal thread and can cause cracking in the shell.

If you're bike is carbon, then don't try it. Take it to a bike shop, talk to the mechanic who's doing the job and ensure they understand that they have to tighten to the correct torque setting. Carbon is far less forgiving as far as over-tightening goes. I've seen several carbon frames that have been damaged in various places by improper torque settings.
