Hi,

I pumped the tyre on my specialized Allez at the weekend and when I got up to 100 psi (what my lbs told me to have the tyres at) on the front, I got a puncture. The join of the valve (presta) to the tube had split for about 1/4 of the circumfrence).

Questions for my more experienced cycle chatters;
1) should i expect this in a tube thats only done about 200miles, or is something wrong?
2) i have Specialized inners as this is what the bike came with -- are they known to be good/bad. I presumed they'd be ok given the brand
3) is the wee bolt that goes on the outside of the presta valve to the wheel rim meant to be tight, medium or loose? (mine were loose)
4) is my pressure too high? (700x20x28C)

Thanks guys

Can be
1: Faulty tube
2: When pumping up the tyre you inadvertently ripped the valve from the tube.
Which is easily done.

Have you got a track pump? These are best for getting maximum pressure into the tube/tyre and have a hose so you are less able to rip the valve.

Inner tubes are much muchness really. I have had Specialized tubes and they are fine.
The 'wee bolt', finger tight will be fine. Not too tight though as it will wedge itself against the wheel rim.
The maximum pressure for your tyre will be printed on the rim of your tyre

i have an Allez and my probs have been down to the tyres rather than the tubes. As ianrauk says, a track pump is a sound investment if you haven't got one. For what it's worth I pump mine up to the max recommended on the wall of the tyre (125 psi I think on my std mondo tyres on my Allez) which helps reduce the number of punctures

I had similar problems with the Spec tubes. I think I had three split at the valve joint before I decided to go back to Schwalbe inners..... no more problems since then.

If the "wee bolt" was loose, it could have allowed the tube to rub a bit as you pumped, leading to the puncture.

Shouldn't really happen but maybe the experience of others with Spesh tubes is relevant too. They do seem rather 'flimsy' to me.

Spesh tubes are made of cheese. Conti or Vittoria for me. Dump the nut in the bin.
