After more fiddling (and reading tinternet, its amazing how many conflicting ideas there is to index your gears!!), I adjusted the H limit screw so the jockey wheels are lined up with the outside edge of the smallest sprocket.

After trying out a few different positions for the H limit, I think I may have cracked it.

I am wondering though, that with my Tiagra shifters its almost like you have to click the lever just slightly past the "click" to get it to shift well. I don't know if its me or if I'm expecting too much from Tiagra, but I expected them to shift better in terms of shifting to the click and it shifts. Certainly the flat bar sti shifters I've got on my hybrid seem more positive.

I'm going to stick me head in my local Halfords (cue groan from the CC forum) and see if they can stick a new cassette on the back to see if that makes any difference as I didn't change it when I changed my chain a couple of weeks ago. I'm going to see if they will let me play with one of there Boardman Comps they've got knocking about to see how it compares.

A couple of thoughts:
If you put on a new chain without a new cassette then it is very possibly the problem.

Are you absolutely sure the rear mech or hanger are not bent? If in doubt get it checked by a mechanic.

Have a look on t'internet/ebay for an Avid Rollamajig. They are as rare as hens teeth these days buy take out that horrible loop of cable at the back of the rear dérailleur.

Good luck!

Well I went to Halfords in Chatham today and saw Paul (BIG RESPECT PAUL I OWE YOU A BEER OR TWO!) who is an enthusiast and also owns a Boardman Comp (same as me). He put it in the stand had a minor fiddle with the indexing and he couldn't get it to shift cleanly throughout the gears. The shift in the higher gears wasn't as clean as the lower gears.

He took the chain off, replaced it with a Shimano 105 10 speed chain, and whadaa ya know. It now shifts as well as I would expect it too!

After all that fannying about changing cables, chains etc etc, it turns out to be the chain. When I think back to when my problems started, it started with busting the original chain!

Paul seemed to think I wouldn't have any problems running a 10 speed chain on a 9 speed cassette as this is what he does. Anyone have any different ideas?

10 speed chains are narrower and are really only designed for 10 speed systems. Having said that I'm sure there are loads of people out there who will disagree.

Normally I would have been hesitant to have fitted a 10 speed chain when clearly have have a 9 speed cassette (especially if it involved my money!), however the gears have never run so quiet and shifted so well.

What could the potenial problems be? I would now be reluctant to fit another 9 speed chain!

This is all very weird. I have two 9 speed bikes with 9 speed chains and they run very very smoothly. Pretty everyone who has a 9 speed bike will have a 9 speed chain and will have no problems. I suspect that there was something wrong with that chain - perhaps a burr, nick, or a slightly stiff link - that was causing the problem. Perhaps if you'd fitted another 9 speed chain then it'd be fine.

Found this, which is interesting:

http://www.cyclechat.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=10660

says you may risk having the 10 speed chain drop between the chainrings.

Yeah I saw that thread. IN fairness on the ride home I didn't experience anything like that, and as long as I don't then I'll be a happy bunny.

My only concern would be if the 10 speed chain accelerates wear on the cassette or the chain rings. I couldn't see how this would be the teeth on the cassette the sprockets are the same width the only difference is the spacing between the sprockets.

I had terrible bother recently with the indexing on my Tiagra-equipped SCR2. If it was adjusted so that it changed nicely up from smallest to largest sprockets, then the shift in the opposite direction would be sticky or very hesitant. If I then corrected that, it wouldn't shift back the other way properly again. There was no happy medium. I checked for snagging, made sure the derailleur was lubed up and not sticking - the lot.

Eventually I realised that I hadn't checked the cable inner for corrosion or general gunking up. Undid the cable and slid the outers away, to find lots of dried muck and some very, VERY dry cabling. Cleaned it all out and lubed them and hey presto - shifting issues solved.

I had new cable outers when had the cable replaced yesterday, so I know it wasn't that!

Well I think I've finally sorted it! I replaced the cassette today with 9 speed Ultegra and new 9 speed Dura Ace chain.

Shifting? On the bench its quiet as a mouse and as positive as I'd expect it to be. haven't road tested it yet but fingers crossed!

I just wish that someone made me bite the bullet earlier on instead of fannying about!
