In seriousness, for a regular use bike, I'd be tempted to replace inners and outers every Spring, just using cheapish bog standard stuff.
In theory you should change outers at the same time as the inners as I have just found out as I have just had similar problems, but it was not all down to the cables as I also found out my hanger was slightly bent causing me "auto shifting".
I suspect I may have bent my hanger when I pulled up onto some ones lawn to let a car pass, and as I very slowly went down a slight slope sideways to get back onto the road, my wheels slid out sideways from underneath me and I had an involuntary lay down on the lawn on my right hand side. Sand was what caused my wheels to slide away from me. Another lesson learnt!

Have you got a bike that gets 'regular' use then Mac?
Last time my gear changing was getting poor, new outer cable worked wonders. Will now do what you suggest and change mine in the Spring eavh year
