I've been going at it a couple of years now. (25k miles, many long long rides, tt's etc) I still pay no attention to speeds whatsoever. Effort on the other hand, is what I stick to. For that you will need a hr monitor or power meter. Speed is just a result of effort and many other variable factors. But as others have said, ignore it all at first and just ride the bike.
