Had lunch today in a good old fashioned greasy spoon.
Much as I love the cafe culture of say Spain or Italy, you can't beat the formica-table-topped-tea-splashing-bacon-smelling Greasy Spoon.

The old fashioned type cafe is a joy to behold. Everyone knows that the food is not that good for you, but, it just tastes sooooo good.

Did it have tomato ketchup bottles shaped like tomatoes with some congealed sauce around the nozzle ?
And sugar dispensing bottles and steamed up windows ?

That's made me really hungry, i could murder a piece of fried bread now.

No, it didn't have the tomatoes, but I remember them fondly too! Sugar was sachets, I'm afraid... I'd love to get those things for my kitchen but I don't think Mrs F would understand or indulge me in this...

If you are in Northampton, try The Super Sausage on St Andrews Road. A real old school truckers cafe much used by locals as well. The breakfast menus used to start with the Transit, move on to the Luton, and end up with the deeply unhealthy ( but utterly fabulous) HGV.

Mmmm... 2 rounds of fried bread,3 rashers of bacon, two fried eggs,1 fried tomato, 2 slices of black pudding,1 lamb chop, 2 tomato sausages, a round of plain bread and a mug of tea please.

a nice simple breakfast to start the day - beats a bowl of cornflakes and a cough any day.

Lyte Byte on Mintsfeet Industrial Estate in Kendal.

Proper cooked dinner (steak and kidney pie, peas, chips and bread and 'butter') with a mug of tea for less than £4.

Egg and Bacon sarnie , just bite into it knowing your going to get yolk all over the place no matter how hard you try not to.

Mug of Coffee not a bloody cup , a mug that you struggle to put your hand around (if the handle is broken off all the better ! )

Interesting prog. on the BBC Radio today. Although we as a nation have dramatically reduced our fat intake, apparently the alternatives many of us are eating are responsible for the current obesity problems. Maybe the greasy spoon was not so bad after all.

This is one thing that Canada has imported from the UK... and made better. Stay with me here - just imagine a greasy spoon that also does decent coffee, bang-up pancakes, in fact a place where you can get steak and eggs with pancakes (and they even do the HP sauce too)... and BTW Canadian back bacon is just so much better than the British equivalent. My favourite local greasy spoon is called 'Peter's Place' and it's awesome.
