I'm thinking of giving it up

There's no way I could ride a bike over 200km in one go without getting a bit bored! So I never have done.

When I did audaxes I always picked the nearest ones to avoid having to drive there and never bothered about points. Really I prefer touring, with a tent preferably.

I did a sportive late May, in the Dales which was fun. We had a strong headwind up Tan Hill and beyond Hawes, it was also raining at times. On the way back they sent us up something I think is called Scarth Nick and it was the nearest I have been to walking up a hill in years. The tailwind on the final stretches was awesome, like being on a motorbike. Next year I hope to do it again.

I suppose I have to say I enjoy audax riding. I came to it fairly late from touring and racing. Physiologically, long-distance/endurance activity suits me, and I love the feeling of covering ground under my own steam - which means I'm not fond of events that have multiple loops or go round and round searching for hills or scenery. I don't get bored.

Just checked and it appears I've clocked up 19 consecutive years of SR. Doesn't time fly when you're enjoying yourself.

I'm intrigued by this boredom aspect

I've never been bored with my own company - I suspect I could entertain myself, locked into a darkened room. So I can't imagine being bored while riding my bike, being outside where, at the very least, you will experience the elements and going somewhere, even if only to ride straight back. And if there's some company along the way, then even less chance of boredom.

Mind you, I came to cycling after years of competitive swimming - so maybe I just learnt early who to entertain myself inside my own head

It's really very simple. I enjoy doing many different things at once in a very disorganised way. After 200km of cycling the urge to do something else becomes irresistible. When I was at school the teaching staff devoted huge amounts of their time to telling me I was disorganised but it

 Yes, very good!

Re boredom, I don't get bored. Not as such. Sure, there are times that are less riveting than others but I wouldn't call it boredom. That is to say, I don't wish to be doing something else. I just question why I'm doing it. I suspect I always will. It's just in my nature to over analyse.
