I'm thinking about moving to Hull

Seriously, does anyone here live there? Would you recommend it?

I noticed the admin lives there. I heard there is a strange fish smell that emanates from the humber.

edit: I think I may have posted this in the wrong section, so please move if necessary.

There are a few of us from the Hull area but not many actually live IN Hull. Can't say I've noticed the fishy smell, but the drains in the city centre give off a certain unpleasant odour now and again. Why are you contemplating moving up here?

There's some lovely cycling to be had round the country lanes as long as you don't crave hills.

I grew up in Hull. I left when I was 18 (20-odd years ago now), and return as little as possible...

There are some nice areas in Hull (around the University, for instance), the parks in the city are quite nice, they have a great rugby team in Hull KR, and I think there is another rugby team and a footy team there somewhere as well.

Having said all that, I think that the areas around Hull are much nicer than Hull itself. For my part, I quite like Surrey and I'm planning to stay here.

I lived in Hull for nearly 5 years

Always found it great - especially around the "Avenues" area. Princes Ave. was the coolest street I've ever lived on. Loads of small independent shops / lots of interesting people / lovely park / amazing buildings

I always found the people fine - never had any trouble although I wouldn't choose to live in the middle of Bransholme or East Hull

The old town is nice too

It doesn't smell of fish - that's Grimsby

And it's dirt cheap of course

It's handy for overnight trips to Rotterdam and Bruges. And it's only a bit more than an hour's drive from Derbyshire.

You can squeeze in a whole weekend, getting the ferry on Friday night and arriving back before work on Monday morning. Punkypossum, Puddleglum and I stuffed ourselves silly at the all-you-can-eat buffet!

How did it go Helen? (The ride not the eating )

I was surprised to find the ride quite easy, but then I'd put the miles in beforehand. We were blessed with perfect weather and I loved Amsterdam. Even when one of our fellow riders fell off she managed to conveniently do it outside a cafe so we could all have a coffee/beer while she recuperated! And we've raised £25,000:biggrin:.

I grew up in East Hull - one reason I left as soon as I could!

To be honest, I have good memories of growing up there as a kid, but the nearer I got to adulthood, the less attraction the place held for me.

I went to university there and had a great time. It's very cheap, which helps when you are student of course! I'd concur with what others have posted - the area around the uni is nice and vibrant as is Cottingham (loads of halls of residence). Stay away from Bransholme and other areas in the east. I also didn't like the area around Anlaby Rd much if I remember rightly. I think west and north west are the best areas if memory serves me well. Beverley is lovely and there are quite a few fabulous villages not far away. Used to do lots of walking in North Yorks too, which is very accessible from Hull.

With regard to the smell, I don't remember fish being a problem but the odour from the dye factory was pretty bad when the wind was blowing in a certain direction. Not sure if that's still the case.

Hull has always suffered from being out on a limb but it does have decent rail links, good access to Yorkshire and the North East, the Humber Bridge links you up with Lincolnshire and the M62 means good road links to Manchester and Leeds. Of course it's also flat and so really excellent for cycling.

As someone else said, you can jump on the ferry. I went to Bruges on the overnight ferry when I was at uni and there were always good deals in the local paper. I moved as I was doing a postgrad in Sheffield and then moved to London for work. The work issue means I would be unlikely to move back, but I work in the media. You do need to consider the work aspect - what industries operate in Hull, but York, Lincoln and Leeds are all commutable.
