Yes, my legs are completely dead, we went into Winchester via Kings Sombourne, there are some buggers up there.

Buggeration. I had a call from my ride chum Jim about this but I was already in Soton without a bike. It was too late to get back to Winchester to pick it up and get back to the University. You probably went with 100yards of my house.

No one need feel bad about getting dropped. SKY had this on their calendar longer than you. Sky probably peaked for the event to keep their air of invincibility going.

A couple of my mates went, said there were about 200 when they set off but after a bit the Uni squad was told to up the pace to thin it out and it was whittled down to 30 by the time they got to Winchester.

I did wonder about this, especially after Roadkill named some villages on the route and said it was lumpy. That suggests they hit the back lanes towards Winch, which certainly would struggle to hold a large and loose group of riders safely.
