Hi everyone,
I haven't been around on this forum for quite a while. The reason being continued health problems.
It all started around one and a half years ago when I caught pneumonia.
I tried to get back on the bike earlier this year but it wasn't a success.and I suffered a relapse.

However, I think it is safe to say that I am finally back to full health. A few weeks ago I started riding again on my trusted 'Look' carbon framed road bike.
My joy was short lived and turned to despair when my beloved steed was stolen.
I did have a rather nice Hybrid bike but I had given it to my Son who was in desperate need and, of course, family.
A kindly neighbour gave me an old MTB.
To say it was heavy is an understatement. Steel frame with full front and rear suspension and big balloon tyres.
I think the tubing was full of lead.:heat:.
I used it for trips along the river and, in the mean time, I was on the look out for a replacement road bike.
I was hampered by the fact that I was pretty short on funds having just payed for a holiday.
I kept hunting on Ebay,Gumtree and Preloved. It always turned out that, when I found something I was either outbid or the bike had already gone. A very frustrating time.

Two days ago I struck lucky. A Carrera 'Vanquish' was on offer not far away for £250.
I was a bit dubious about what I had heard about Carrera bikes. So I shot off down to Halfords to check the 'Vanquish' out.
I was surprised to find that this bike was very nice and was retailing at £499.00. I gave it a thorough going over and, apart from a future need to upgrade some components at a later date, I decided to go for the used one on offer.
It turned out that the bike had only been used a couple of times and the bike was virtually new.
The chap had purchased it on a whim, fell off, ( a clipless moment) and decided cycling wasn't for him.

Well I've done the necessary adjustments. Put on a 'Charge Spoon' saddle, changed the cassette for Tiagra 11/25 and been out for two 15 mile rides.
To put it shortly, I'm well satisfied. The bike handles very nicely thank you.
Due to my time on the MTB my fitness level is coming along nicely and I'm looking forward to many more rides before the weather turns too detrimental.

Thanks for listening.
Catch you again soon.

@Biker Joe Glad your health problems are over and your fitness is building back up

Sounds like you have made a good purchase. Hope you manage to get some decent runs in while it is still nice. Are you keeping the MTB too? Will make a good winter run around to save the good bike from the salt/mud on the roads.

Good to hear from you again Joe and I am glad to see you are getting back into it again and your health is well on the mend. Sorry to hear about your "Look", it was a lovely bike and you must have been gutted.

Carrera bikes are OK. Most of the problems come from the Halfords staff who don't know what they are doing. As you fettle your own bikes I am sure you will get sterling service from it.

We will have to go for a ride out soon. Take care mate and keep up the good work.

Thanks for your comment.
I'm not keeping the MTB. If you could see it you would understand. It's a real monstrosity of a beast. I have given it back to my neighbour with thanks. Despite my lack of good will towards it, it did me a turn and helped get me back on the wheels.

I have 3 halfords bikes and i am lucky enough that the store in particular has competent staff who are keen riders .
I owned a vanquish for a bit and for the money it was a good bike.

Thanks Bill.
Yeah, loosing the 'Look' was a real wrench. I still haven't got over it.
I know it's a waste of time but I find myself looking at every bike I see in case it's mine.
The 'Vanquish is pretty cool. The components are pretty cheap but nothing that cant be upgraded over time.
Tyres will be the next upgrade but not for a few weeks. The ones on there are new and good for quite a few miles. I'll go for my favourites, 'Rubino vittoria pro.' eventually. The shifters are OK Shimano 'Sora' 9 speed. The ones without the thumb shift.
The chainset looks as if it will wear quite quickly but I'm hoping it will take me over the winter. Next Spring I'll upgrade them. Fortunately 9 speed stuff can be picked up quite cheap now and I'm happy with 9 speed.
I'm off to my Son soon who lives in Kingston upon Thames. I'm taking my bike as he is a bike fanatic too. Hoping for some good rides together. I should be back around the end of September though and we can get together then.
You take care too, mate.
I'll keep in touch.
