So, decided to pop down to Lidl yesterday to check out these cycling clothes and ended up getting a compression top, bib leggings and some cycling socks. Tried it all on today (first time trying on Lycra) and what can I say? It's tight. Very tight. At first I was a little bit like "Ugh...I look weird", but once I had the full suit on I don't think I looked too bad and wouldn't be bothered about going out cycling in it, it was also very warm, I can see why cyclists like this stuff.

All I need now is a jersey and I'll be a full Lycra-clad roadie :3

lycra is often the source of jokes in cycling but when you actually cycle in lycra it quickly becomes obvious that its perfect , no getting trousers caught in the chain , less resistance , warmer, comfy padding in the bum and you get to feel like a super hero

I ride in my work clothes, or failing that jeans and a t-shirt. Man up! Just takes my jeans a few hours to dry out after a long ride.

Haha, well I was going to post photo's, but had no one to take them and my OH (who is currently at work) has expressed her anti-views on cycling in general, so I can't imagine she'd take too kindly to me in lycra, wait until one day I show up at her workplace and embarrass her! (She works in a supermarket )

I'd resisted lycra for years, but as soon as I tried it, I knew why it's what serious cyclists wear for real long-distance comfort. I do enough riding that I've managed to convince myself that (most of) my collection of apparel is necessary.

That said, I do still do the 5-mile commute in jeans and ordinary shirt or T-shirt, partly because it's more convenient in my circumstances, and partly it's rather nice to surprise drivers that a hippy-looking going-grey commuter in jeans can keep up with them at 30mph (if the wind's in the right direction!) My favourite look is the double-take in the rear view mirror when they realise I'm keeping up and eyeballing them through their rear window.

Excellent

Lycra's great - I've lost some weight through cycling, but that's not why I'm a cyclist. I've still got a spare-ish tyre round the middle  but if I get on the bike in 'normal' clothes, I feel v.strange.
There's nothing like lycra for practicality - bright, dries fast, doesn't feel like cardboard or chafe if it gets wet. Never have bits hanging over.
It's as much a fantastic invention as fleece fabric.

Seigi, wear your lycra with pride...and make your lady the envy of her friends :becool:

I wore bibtights + jersey for CX racing last year: great as the material doesn't sag when it is wet and muddy so you don't catch the material on the saddle when jumping off and on. Could have cared less what anyone thought, although I did also wear Ron Hills + jacket over the top before and after, more for heat than anything else.
oh and it is easily washed & does not go a horrible grey colour like the baselayers I wore for caving...
