Pulled up to the stop line at a RAB the left lane has an arrow indicating left only, there is no straight on just left or right, I am in primary position and some prat in a car tries (unsuccesfully) to squeeze past between me and the pavement then gives me grief for not indicating.

I gave him some 1 and 2 fingered hand signals later as he got stuck in traffic again and asked him if he new what that meant  .

Seriously though does anyone think its neccessary to indicate in a compulsory left turn lane?I may do anyway in future as obviously some motorists are too dense to work it out.

Surely if you were doing anything other than turning left you would have been in the wrong lane? Like you said, thick as two short planks.

I agree, if there is only one option to turn in that lane it is pointless to indicate. My driving instructor also told me you don't signal to move around cars/objects unless your changing a lane but you see loads of people do that too.

If something is close behind I do indicate to move arouind a parked car, might just wake the driver up a bit that something is occuring.

In this case though there was only one legal option ie to go left .I think from now on though I might start indicating at junctions like that just to make it crystal clear to the really thick drivers you come across now and then.

Having said that this is the only driver I have encountered that has been as stupid as that so maybe Im just getting paranoid.

In this sense my viewpoint was directed from driving a van/car's perspective. If cycling then you would probably aim for manoeuvring early and taking primary if available to do so safely.

Thats what I would do as well, sometimes its a fine line between taking primary to early and annoying drivers or too late then letting the swines cut you up.

Its easy to get it out of perspective though. In 20 miles and god knows how many cars I encountered today only one managed to annoy me yet he is the one that will stick in my mind now.

Yeah unfortunately I know exactly what you mean.

Another thing that can happen is the random car beepers. One time it was an old lady (probably dangerously old with bad reactions) beeping as she overtook (was this a requirement in the 30's/40's?), and another off the top of my head was a polish driver in the early hours one morning setting off to meet up for a ride in the lakes; he beeped when overtaking too even though there was not a sole around!

That is not at all an uncommon practice here. Particularly on narrow rural roads. In truth, I always hear vehicles behind me anyway so don't really need the extra warning but it never hurts to be safe. It used to make me jump even though I knew the car was there! At first, I thought (with south-east UK head on) that it was aggressive but soon realised it's quite the opposite.

Re the marked lane signalling, no I don't think it's necessary. But then perhaps your extra signals weren't necessary either!

It was the same when i was in Turkey, cars beeping left right and centre... after a few days thinking 'what's your fecking problem?' I realised it more a case of 'beep beep, i'm here just in case you hadn't noticed me '

I don't know what it is alot of cars on the continent do that but it seems to be a pleasant 'toot, toot' rather than an aggressive 'get out of my way parp' which you get here; same horns different drivers!
