Am I missing something? 'the cyclist has been named as Mathew hook from Sheffield!'

Has now yes, but when the post was started apparently the rider was a John Doe. The article has since been updated following identification.

R.I.P. fellas.

Edited... and beware of Latitude other than as a guide. In most phones it acts on the phone signals so is often only partially accurate, and if in an area where masts are limited then updates can be some time (and place) apart.

It is only a guide, but if i'm not home at a certain/due time, my son can check my rough location, he will call me, maybe I can't answer as i'm pedalling, in a shop, nature break etc but will call him back within a few minutes, if I don't, he can see if I move location, If I don't there could be a good chance i've had an accident. My son isn't the kind to go into a panic for no reason, so would prob try to call me again - This is a scenerio we have discussed him several times, I have used Lattituded to follow him all the way to Watford, fisrt time he rode his motorbike there!

Lattitude doesn't alawys give an excat location,(quite often if i'm at home it shows me being in the park over the road) but it would give the emergency services a grid area to begin looking....
Better then having no idea at all where I could be.

Unfortunately this is not the first time this has occurred in Derbyshire. A few years ago a motor cyclist killed a pedal cyclist in the Goyt Valley when he lost control on a bend.
I work in the peak district as a copper and have unfortunately seen and dealt this before. I was not at work when this occurs as I was on nights but it does show how you need id when cycling alone. I see it week in and week out when motor and pedal cyclists ride alone and incidents occure.

Happened here a short while back, guy was hit by a lorry and killed took over a week to identify him.

Im another ROADID user, never cycle without it. Has the followong detail on it:

Name

House No and Post code

ICE phone number

Blood Group

Ordered from the USA, very prompt delivery and actually worked out cheaper than the UK equivalent

I carry a mobile phone and it has my home phone number on it, you can also put your details on it as a call number, or just put a bit of paper in your topeak with details or sew labels in your jacket. If I think about worse case scenarios though it would put me off riding, and walking and driving.

Not that I have done it yet but I intend to get my postcode and house number stamped on my bike. I thought this was only about getting ones bike back if it were ever recovered after being stolen but it would also act to identify me if I were killed or incapacitated.

the thing about mobile phones, it doesn't matter if its lock, all they need is the sim card, which will tell them which network and the sim card number, as all mobile phones are or should be registered in the phone owners name or at least a family member....

obviously not the quickest way of IDing someone but it is possible.....
I bet a fair proportion have PAYG SIMs, which are not traceable.

That's a sad story, at least they've now identified him.

Lack of ID is something I'd briefly thought about as I generally carry only a phone and my house keys, so after reading this thread I've went ahead and placed an order with RoadID. Thanks to those who have mentioned it. I looked at the UK equivalent iceid.co.uk but like addictfreak says, it's cheaper to buy it from the US! I went for the slim band too, which ICEID don't have, and it cost £12 delivered (with a $1 off code - here's mine good for 20 uses for the next few weeks if anyone else is considering ordering from RoadID: ThanksLianne9081277).
