You'll definitely notice the difference if you get handbuilt Open Pros or Open Sport on a reasonable hub, and you'll have 100+ pounds to spare on upgrading something else.

Except if you want tyres too you won't have so much left over.

Just bought some new tires and they've made a massive difference to be fair - noticed I was cruising along a good 3mph faster than normal and that was in the wind and rain...

So I reckon I'll buy the veloce groupset (might as well try some of this non-shimano stuff, see if it's all it's cracked up to be) which comes with hubs included and then get my LBS to build some decent wheels around them.

Then I'll have spare wheels, groupset, stem, bars, seatpost and saddle. Hmmm - what to do next...

It isn't a budget frame really, it's just the base model (£800 with Sora!) of a range which tops out at about £2k using the same frame so it wouldn't be "over-upgraded" as such.
I got the bike not knowing what I'd end up doing riding-wise really or if I'd just sack it off once the novelty wore off. Now I'm doing quite a bit and enjoying it I figure I'll upgrade it now before the summer arrives (those 3 days in July!).

Muchios apologios ...dont know why, i thought you were saying it was a £300 BIKE....not £300 to upgrade with. No wonder i thought it was strange
Carry on without me....i'll get me coat

Unless you know something I don't you wont be getting that lot for £300!

Your wheels should cost you at least another £100

You're talking of £30+ for each rim, £10+ for cheap spokes and £10+ for building the wheel. Thats £50 per wheel, £100 for the set!
The Veloce groupst with hubs is close to £500 at most places.

You'd need to get everything effectively half price!

Jay - Do the wheels first. Even on my 20 year old behemoth I have noticed a huge difference in performance upgrading from the original steel wheels to Aluminium ones. Also good tyres (for your type of riding) will make a huge difference. I would only swap out the group-set if there was a debilitating problem with it.
