Spotted this tip on the ctc site and think it could be usefull.

If your miles from home and it suddenly gets very cold buy a newspaper and spread the sheets about between the layers of your clothing. It would certainly keeep the wind out until you get home then you can do the crossword while warming up with a coffee.:biggrin:

That's the old trick the pros use on the major tours when at the top of a climb before the descent. Fans would hand out newspapers for the pros to stuff down the inside of their jerseys to help keep warm on the speedy descents.

I know this trick from watching the CH4 coverage of the tour years back (whenever that started, '84?).

Some guy at school said "you've got to watch this. It's brilliant!". He was right. He was always discovering stuff as it goes, El Greco (brilliant), The Jonzun Crew's "Lost in Space" album (brilliant). One day I said we'd go watch the finish in Paris, haven't got around to it yet. Where was I?

Buy a newspaper! And I thought I was the anachronistic one

Either grab one of those annoying free papers (The Metro, The London Paper, The Evening Standard, etc) or download the front page onto your iPod Touch/ iPhone / Laptop, then stuff that down your jersy.

Sorted

So go and buy a newspaper, just like that. Where I train by the time I cycled to the nearest shop that sells newspapers to get a newspaper to stuff up my top I could have got home and been in the warm. If it's that's cold you going to get to that situation then you should have dressed sppropriately before setting out.

Good Grief!

Don't buy a newspaper; your bike will be stolen while you're in the newsagent's.

Just ride faster.

It doesn't work that way, windchill will kill you before the heat from your legs reaches your chest.

Ride slower, with alternate spinning - grinding to keep the legs from freezing solid....

A large carrier bag is also a good way to keep out the wind and rain in an emergency. Some pro,s still use the newspaper, even in this day and age.Another good tip is to take a large bin bag with pre-cut holes for head and arms to put on under you shirt and tucked into your shorts. They take up very little space and work a treat.

Jaysus! Why not carry an old cardboard box with you too so that you can stop for the night if you feel tired?

The London Paper ceased to exist a month or two back.
