Even if the benefits were proved, why should it be compulsory? You don't hurt anyone else by not wearing one and we all have right to go to Hell in any way we chose.

Alcohol causes many thousands of deaths each year, often to innocent parties and costs the health service millions yet we never see the safety nannies like BRAKE and ROSPA trying to get that banned.

I work as a jailer and if we ever had a prohabition on alcohol in this country i would be out of a job. Thats how demanding pissed people are are the emergency services. Yet it's still as cheap as chips and sold by the gallon.

I agree that lids shouldn't be compulsary but in this nanny state we live in . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

According to one study 60% of admitted head injuries were alcohol related (Thornhill 2000)

Surely we look at drinking helmets!

In answer to the OP, it wouldn't change my habits. I wear one. It's been a requirement for years to wear a helmet to race, so I figure I might as well wear one the rest of the time.

As for the merits of making them compulsory....yawn. It's a matter of free choice.

Helmets can be dangerous to others. When leaving home the other day I was wearing mine when I kissed my wife goodbye and nearly had her eye out with the peak.

Clothing. You should wear
a cycle helmet which conforms to current regulations, is the correct size and securely fastened

that to me means you need one

it says should and not must.............honestly if you don't understand the highway code that's fine but at least don't lecture others with your ignorance

Supercooper, I hope that hasn't come across as too harsh, it's just this sort of debate can get heated and misinformation like that, however well intentioned, can really push the wrong buttons.

It makes me think of drivers/passengers screaming out of windows that I have to be on a cycle path, or I have to be in the gutter. Basically people that don't know the law but feel able to scream their incorrect interpretation at others.

I'm sure you didn't mean it like that and I didn't mean to be quite as snappy

It's also been a requirement in all car racing as well............. does that mean we might as well wear one in the car?
