middle of nowhere in France
i was walking the dogs downhill this morning, when a cyclist came uphill - looked like no effort at all, and fast, now me, i'd be " huffing and puffing"

You know the answer: practice (I'm still working on it)

You'll know you are then when you take a friend for a "flat" ride, and she complains about all the hills

I think you'll find they were absolutely busting a gut- saw you coming and switched on their 'I'm not bothered by this, its easy' face then died when you were out of sight.
A trick used by pro's to play mind games with competitors on long climbs and by general cyclists when passing anyone who's in all the gear and has no idea.

Ha, ha. Eight months on and I'm afraid I still huff and puff up the hills  I make myself do them reasonably often in the hope that I will get better but it is taking a while! It's not till you look back several months at the speed you used to climb some of them that you realise that you have actually made some progress even although you still find it hard work. In fact, the first hill I did I felt physically sick just before the top in the granny gear and now I regard it as one of the easier hills around here and don't mind it at all.

If practice really made you a better climber, we would all be good at it by now. :bicycle:
must be the exception to the rules as I still struggle and still avoid some of the hills around here.

Rule # 10 // It never gets easier, you just go faster.
As this famous quote by Greg LeMan tells us, training, climbing, and racing is hard. It stays hard. To put it another way, per Greg Henderson: “Training is like fighting with a gorilla. You don’t stop when you’re tired. You stop when the gorilla is tired.”

ha 2 months into regular cycling and I still struggle with some of the hills round here but on the rare occasion I see my other half in the car or meet her somewhere I would never admit it was not easy, but I have to say I feel better when I do a regular route than I used to and are less out of breath and quicker doing it, not sure I would ever admit I had struggled, male pride I recon

One of the first "hills" I did when I first started riding had me on the granny gear and huffing and puffing, thinking what have I got myself into. I did it last week in Top gear on my standard geared bike at 26 MPH.

s7ephanie it just don't matter how long or just how much you huff and puff your way or even get of and walk the bike up a hill just as long as you are enjoying yourself ( well overall at least ) plus as said before practice helps lol.
