hi. i hope this is the right forum.

i am looking to buy a pair of padded cycle shorts. i cycle ONLY on an exercise bike indoors. it's a pretty hi-spec one. still, i'm not on a real bike. mine has no wheels. clear?

anyway, i currently do 21km rides in 40 minutes every morning. after this point, my bum is numb and hurting. my legs are not too bad and i feel i could cycle on a lot further but the pain stops me from doing so.

so i figured padded cycle shorts would be helpful?

can anyone link me to or recomend a good brand/pair? price is not really an issue but i do need quite a bit of padding as i'm a few stone heavier than i should be.

thanks for any help that is forthcoming!

My first pair were altura boxer short type from evans cycles, they were ok after a while the padding went flat I now use dhb from wiggle and found them to be excellent, I have ridden to Hastings and back to dartford in one hit , A grand total of 103 miles and could still sit comfortably the next day so I recommend the dhb shorts

It might not be just the shorts, out cycling on the road you are constantly moving around on the saddle and at times, out of the saddle standing on the peddles, try moving about and changing your position more often which may help. I get a similar thing when I use my rollers and have to keep reminding myself to change position.
Hope this helps

If your indoors why not put a towel on the seat or something like that.
It doesn't matter how you look when your in the privacy of your own home.

Is your exercise bike set up properly for you? On a 'real' bike, the saddle height/tilt, distance between saddle and handlebars, can all make a huge difference to feeling (I know my bum felt a lot better on long rides once I had a bike that had been measured for me). Just cos you're indoors doesn't mean you don't need your bike fitting properly!

I would say its likely the seat is too soft. Most exercise bikes are like sitting on a whoopee cushion. Too soft and your sit bones will sink in putting pressure on the tissue surrounding them.

More padding will just make it worse.

On some exercise bikes you can fit any saddle that is designed to fit a normal bike. If this is the case on yours look at some of the numerous threads on this forum that discuss the relative merits of different saddles.

Any chance of a photo (of the saddle---not your bum). My excercise bike saddle is awful......it's just so wide that it digs in....but the design wont allow me to change it (it's a Roger Black bike).
As others have said.....try changing the height/rake/position of the saddle-----that helped me a lot and I can now do 10-15 miles in relative comfort.

thanks for all the comments so far. i have found a pair of dhb shorts on wiggle that i might purchase today. here's the bike i have:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/York-Fitnes...RTH0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335778779&sr=8-1

i'm just cycling to lose weight and get a bit fitter. no close up pic of the seat to hand now but it goes very wide at the rear and i guess it is pretty soft with a decent amount of padding. i think it is changeable so will investigate saddles if new shorts do not help. yes - the shape does resemble a whoopee cushion! still, it does make me numb etc after 30 mins or so,

i'm 5'9 and i have the height set up so i can reach the pedals fine. it's on about the medium/slightly above setting. doesn't feel like i am too cramped or too stretched etc. i will try standing up or moving around a bit while cycling to help blood flow though - good idea!

how would a towel help? more cushioning? willing to try it. obviously i don't care what i look like

so the shorts might help? think i'll give them a try.

All the exercise bike saddles I have tried have been sheer murder; they are too wide and too soft with nasty edges that cut into you. However I can see from the picture that you have a very limited choice because most proper cycling saddles won't fit your seatpost. Try a decent bike shop like Evans Cycles, who will have a saddle that fits your machine.

Angle and height of saddle will affect comfort and padded shorts will help.

Looking at that picture on amazon then the saddle is way too squishy. Get a proper bike saddle and a cheap pair of karrimor/ muddy fox padded shorts from JJB etc etc. No point paying out on expensive kit if you are only doing 40 mins a day.
