I always grease spoke nipples when building wheels.

Some people use oil, linseed oil or some fancy spoke prep which acts like loctite.

All of which have slightly different purposes.

However; grease seems to be a big NO NO!

I've never had any trouble with spokes coming loose, and it definitely prevents spokes from twisting when under high tension during the final part of the build. AND after several years you can still twist the spoke nipples to do a few repairs.

So what's the problem? Am I missing something?

I was told that it can cause them to work loose but if this isn't the case then I don't see the problem.

Brass nipples on new spokes has a relatively low coefficient of friction. After a time there is an interaction and they will sieze very slightly and therefore tend to remain true. Lubricatinbg spokes can cause the spokes to work loose more that if they were left bare.
