I've actually done this. Broke a car (Passenger side) window with a stone flicked up from my tyre as I was speeding down a bus lane.

Common method used for smashing car windows are small stones.

If we're talking theft its usually small bits of porclain from spark plugs 1-2mm diameter. Shatters the window with almost no effort

It's not uncommon. My cycling buddy punctured his front tyre last week when he pinged a stone.
