What brand of cheap and cheerful? I am intrigued.

Berberana Vina Canda. £3.99 at Sainsburys.

Wolf Blass? Lovely stuff, especially the President's Selection Black Label Cab-Sauv. However, for better or worse we are sticking to a European wine policy, seeing shipping it half way round the world seems pretty daft.

Don't know that wine but Berberana are generally good.

You've made me fell guilty now what with your low miles wine...I've got some New Zealand Sauv. Blanc. Mind you, since they are over here kicking our arse at rugby I suppose I can dream it came over on the same plane....

If I'm honest (and sorry for playing devil's advocate) I look down on people who spend less than a tenner on wine. They should drink special brew instead.

Then you are a wine snob and I diskard you utterly.
Besides, if all you do is get scootered on the stuff then that's just £10 x X wasted.

I never spend less than a tenner on wine. 4 bottles at 3 quid each for me.

Speaking of Spanish wine, if you want great(ish) wine at an (almost) affordable price, this is worth finding:

Seriously, it is very good value for money. The Petit Verdot is superb.
But is it expensive enough to satisfy Abbers?

I'm not a wine snob and there are many (mainly Aussie) wines that have a consistent flavour, reasonably priced. I think I've drunk most of them over the years. But yes, those wines are the equivalent of eating out at a decent chain rather than going to an independent restaurant. You're hardly going to be surprised, which is precisely why they are successful, mainstream brands.

Having said that, I think I've only once come across a (red) wine that I couldn't drink.
