I’m regularly overtaken adjacent to bollards-saves seconds but is hazardous.

Council planner #1: Okay, we are going to put a pedestrian refuge on the Burnley Road at Portsmouth [CJ: near Cornholme/Todmorden!] to help parents get their kids across the road to the playground in safety.

Council planner #2: Wait a minute ... cyclists will get in the way of cars in both directions. Drivers would be forced to slow down for a few seconds and wait until they have passed the refuge before being able to overtake!

Council planner #3: Hang on ... how about building a 50 metre cycle path on the playground side of the road to get those damn cyclists out of the way? Cyclists coming the other way could be dumped off the road to the parking area in front of the houses and then re-enter Burnley Road 50 metres further on, beyond the refuge!

Council planners #1 and #2: Eureka - make it so!

Local parents: Er, so parents and children coming out of the playground might be mown down by cyclists on the cycle path, and ditto in the parking area on the other side!

Local cyclists: And we clearly do not have a right to be on the road so we have to f**k off out of the way of impatient motorists, be brought into conflict with parents and children, and then have to fight to get back onto the road again after our 50 metre detours!

That one doesn't look good... Why dump you on the road just before a narrowing?

No, that bit is a dropped kerb for the pedestrians. Cyclists get dumped back onto the road a few yards further on. I'll do a screenshot from the other direction ...

On the right is where the short cycle path re-emerges onto the road. On the left is where cyclists coming down a fast downhill section of road are supposed to slow down to leave the road for a few seconds!

OOER !! Cyclists having to slow down. Sounds just like what everybody else is supposed to do when interacting with pedestrians.

I am typically doing 30 mph down that stretch of road along with the traffic and I have rarely seen a pedestrian actually crossing there. It seems a bit counter-productive to get cyclists to brake hard in front of cars in order to get out of their way so the cyclists do not slow them down ...

Does anyone else see a rider up ahead and know exactly when you will overtake them? I mean, you know the road, it's on your commute, so you see someone cycling ahead and can quite easily judge their speed so you think "ok, they're going at that speed, so I will overtake them just before the bend" or whatever. It's not difficult. Do it every day. It's easy peasy. Piece of cake. You just judge their speed. So how come so many drivers can't do it? Someone of this parish has a compilation clip of untold drivers doing dumbass shimmies and emergency braking cos they misjudge the overtake badly. You hear the engine note change, think to yourself "they're not, are they?" and lo and behold they slam the brakes on Cos they suddenly realise they're not going to make it. Barmy. I think the Blue Danube is played over the clips, it's like a rubbish driver waltz. So how come they get a pretty basic bit of driving so wrong? It's really not hard.

I think there are still some drivers out there who think cyclists are pootling at 4mph and don't think about the fact they are moving, just must get in front.

As for your first question I don't know where I might overtake them, as I or they may speed up (I've noticed that I can up my speed a little when I see someone going slower), but I know I will think about whether it's safe to do so before I attempt to overtake them and choose a spot where I think is the best place.

Assuming the speed doesn't change it is pretty easy to judge. Say you're walking towards a door and someone is approaching from the same distance, say fifty feet, and you can easily tell when you will both reach the door. But that's walking so maybe not the same. Along Thorpe Road in Norwich after the Pound Lane rb there's a long straight bit before another rb. Dead straight, perfect sight lines. A driver behind will slowly approach and go for an overtake just as we both reach the rb. How in the name of left-handed Greek buggery can they get it so wrong? It's blatantly obvious what's going to happen yet they still do it and jam the brakes on so there's squeeling brakes and aborted overtakes and completely avoidable stress and argy bargy.

It's the MGIF attitude that many drivers can't seem to shake off. Not a pinch point, but I have this T junction (below) on my commute at which I turn left. It's quite amazing how many drivers will try to overtake me from roughly the point where this pic was taken in order to beat me to the junction. The dumb thing is of course, they then fart about at the junction for ages slowing me up. Even V strong primary won't put the dumbest drivers off here.
I can only conclude that most drivers are really not very good at it.

Driver goes to overtake a cyclist, suddenly notices the bollard, smashes them, turns the car over, no further action:

South Wales Police in a tweet: “Unbelievably there were only minor injuries.”

A spokesman added: "On pulling out to pass a cyclist the vehicle was in collision with a central island and turned over. There were no injuries caused to anyone apart from minor ones to the driver. No further action will be taken.
