Just wanted to canvas some opinions from folks on what sort of average speed improvement to expect going from riding a hybrid bike to then riding a road bike (assuming same circuit, perceived exertion etc). Currently own a claud butler urban 300 (unmodified) and thinking of buying first road bike (prob a specialized secteur (any opinions on road bike choice welcome too..). Cheers

Not nearly as much as you would think. I have a Specialized Ruby Elite (carbon fibre throughout) weighs about 8kg and a second hand Dawes Discovery 301 hybrid which weighs around 13kg. Difference in average speed over some of my routes is only about 1mph at best. It really surprised me how little difference it made. The perceived exertion seems less as it is more responsive and I suppose a good rider may feel more benefit. I am just a plodder ^_^

Hi there I ride a Specialized Sirrus Elite and recently bought my first road bike - a B'twin Triban 3. I find that when rested e.g. on a weekend ride, when I haven't commuted on the Friday, my average speed is about 3 or 4 miles an hour faster (like User). When switching between the road bike and the hybrid bike on the daily commute, the difference is only 1-2mph faster.
Also agree with User about down hill speed...the road bike is MUCH faster
