He came and did the commentary for the Blackpool GP weekend and even on the Saturday night whilst commentating on a Cat 3/4 race you could hear his enthusiasm coming across.

Do you mean the reporter who does the links from the velodrome? I think she's okay; she does seem to know something and is clearly an enthusiast - she was even crying her eyes out when Hoy got his third gold which shows some sort of involvement.

As for Hugh Porter - well, behind every good man. . . And in this case he has his wife sat next to him keeping track of all the points, positions and statistics.

Indeed. Jill something or other. She is actually well informed on track cycling and has been doing it for several years.

What has surprised me is the lack of professionalism demonstrated by the BBC in the cycling coverage, mainly on the alternate views on Freeview. There have been countless instances of extended periods with no commentary at all, no presenting and no links or explanation. Porter seems to disappear for long periods, basically leaving the coverage in no one's hands at all. He usually makes it back in time to start commentating on British input in the events, but the gaps with nothing are enormous.

This is disrespectful to cycling and shows that the BBC, even though cycling is bringing home nearly 50% of GB gold medals, still considers it a second rate sport requiring marginalisation in favour of blanket, multi-commentator-and presenter coverage of GB failing to win gold in athletics. I doubt if things will improve post-Games in getting cycling the respect it deserves, on this evidence.
