my HRM on my garmin seems to be playing up, have tried tightening the belt, but still seems really incosistent, and the readings dont match how I am feeling ( showing 90bpm when im toiling up hills that normally have me at about 170-190) . has anyone else had this, and any recommendations. first thought is to change the battery over. using a garmin 800

Thanks

Battery. And if that doesn't work. Change strap.

The polar soft strap works great and is a lot more comftable.

Echoing others but I had the same problem with my garmin 510 HRM - started giving false readings then not reading at all, was advised by garmin to change the batteries to no avail and then took it into evans who swapped it for a replacement one, Garmin had since changed the design the old one was just black elastic, the new one has a brown almost chequered pattern on it which apparently is far better then the old design. So far no problems at all, I have heard though that the polar one works just as well - you can buy just the strap and swap over your HRM sensor with a little modification which works out cheaper.

The garmin sensor clips straight onto the polar strap. No mods needed

It might be the battery, but your garmin display *should* display a low battery warning. It could be the position of the contacts, so check you're placing it at the correct height below your nips. Another potential problem might be electical contact, so try giving the sensors a lick before you put the HRM on. It's gross, but it works.

More details here..

I changed the battery on mine when it behaved a bit oddly. There is something about leaving it without a battery in for a few mins to reset itself before putting in the new battery....don't know how true it is though but I left mine a few mins before putting in the new battery....
